| Notes for Henry Mayze | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| "History and Genealogy of the Thomas Hollandsworth Family" by James A. Hollandsworth B: 1895. On page 50 there is a response letter about some questions he asked of Burgie McComas. She writes "I found in Shenandoah County that Henry Mayes was from France". Henry County will book #1 p 151: HENRY MAYZE, sick and weak...4 Nov 1786 Pr 15 May 1787. To son ABRAHAM MAYZE five shillings; to son SHERWOOD MAYZE one shilling three pence; to son LITTLEBERY MAYZE wheat; to son HENRY MAYZE a cow; to son DAVID MAYZE land where I now live, 110 ac, horse, stock and to take care of my wife PHEBY MAYZE; to son GOODING MAYZE saddle and saddle bags; to son LIGGIN MAYZE 120 accs that I purchased of George Lumpkin, colt, feather bed and furniture; to dau ELIZABETH GOSSET one shilling; to dau SUSANNAH HOLLANDSWORTH five shillings; to dau FANNY SOLLAMON a small pot; to dau PHEBEY MAYZE be, furniture, dishes and cotton and flax wheels. Exors: David Mayze and friend David Lanier. Wit: Alexander Joyce D. Lanier, Joseph Chandler On with more notes from Ann: According to Bert Mayes of Oak Ridge, TN, the earliest record of our Henry Mayes is when he bought 122 acres in Brunswick co Va in 1754. he sold this land in 1765 and bought 550 acres to the West in Mecklenburg Co VA. In 1771, he sold that land and moved West again to Henry Co VA where he bought 110 acres of land in 1773. He remained in Henry Co until he died. No one has yet found Henry's parents, or has solved the early Mayes lineage. Re the following, there's more than one Henry Mays around in those days; these may or may not be for our Henry (in all likelihood they are, because wife is Phoebe): 23 May 1754 HENRY MAYES bought 122 acres on Avents Creek in Brunswick Co Va from John Brown (source: Ann Moore family group sheet) 26 Oct 1765 HENRY MAYES sold land back to John Brown. Phoebe Maze, Henrys wife, signed deed. source A. Moore FGS) 14 Oct 1765 HENRY MAYES bought 550 acres on Jenitoe Creek in Mecklenburg Co Va His wife Phebe signed deed (source A. Moore FGS) 9 Dec 1771 HENRY MAYES sold the 550 acres. Phebe signed deed. (source AMoore FGS) 27 May 1773 HENRY MAYES bought 110 acres on Marrowbone Creek in Pittsylvania Co. This later became Henry County. (source A.Moore FGS) Source: Henry Mayes-Land Deeds: 23 May 1754 bought 122 acres on Avents Creek in Brunswick Co VA from John Brown. 26 Oct 1765 sold land back to John Brown and Phoebe Maze, wife, signed deed. 14 Oct 1765 bought 550 acres on Jenitoe Creek in Mecklenburg Co VA 09 DJec 1771 sold the 550 acres. Phebe signed both deeds. On 27 May 1773 bought 110 acres on Marrowbone Creek in Pittsylvania Co. This later became Henry Co. I know that the IGI has to be taken with a grain of salt. Anyone can input any information without proof. Note this: Henry Mayes who's will was executed 13Apr1751, probated 26 Oct 1752, Amelia Co.,VA. From Julie Case on the BB: I checked the index to the three volumes of Lyman Chalkley, "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia: Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County 1745-1800," and found many MAIS, MAIES, MAYES, MAYS, MAZE names and page references. I checked only those for people named Henry. Vol. I, p. 182 [Augusta County Court Order Book No. XVI, page 25, November 16, 1774], "Henry and Nicholas MAZE -- naturalized", 429, 489 Vol. I, p. 429 [from section marked "Various Old Papers 1760-1770"] "Petition for road from Adam Reader's Mines to Isaac Robertson's, from thence to Widow Wright's Milll; thence to Thomas Harrison's in the Great Road to the Court House, 2d January, 1761. Thomas Pickins, Isaac Robertson, James Wright, Tunes Van Pelt, Jhon Chrisman, Lydia Wright, William Munsey, Robert Bellshe, Jacob Gum, Jacob Gum Jr., John White, Leonard Herring, John Black, Thomas Harrison, William Dunlop, Robert Kearr, Alexander Painter, Jacob Miller, Scidmore Munsey, William Pickins, John Jackson, David Robertson, Henry MASE, James Thomas." [now you know all the neighbors] Vol. I, p. 489 (from the section "Petitions to May Court, 1767") "To the Worshipful Court of Augusta County. We, your humble petitioners, pray that your worships would be pleased to grant a road to be cleared from Adam Reader's Mines to Isaac Robertson's, from thence to Widow Wright's Mill, from thence to Thomas Harrison's, on the great road to the Court House, which will be the covenants' road to travel either north or south, to mill or market. May ye second day, year 1767. Your favor will oblige your humble petitioners. (Signed) Thos. Pickins, James Van Pelt, Lydia Wright, Jacob Gum, Leonard Herring, Wm. Dunlop, Wm. Pickins, David Robertson, Mathias Kinder, James Wright, Timothy Warren, Robert Bellshe, John White, Thomas Harrison, Jacob Miller, Alexander Peanter, James Thomas, Henry MAZE." I found many MAYES, etc. references in Vols. II and III of Lyman Chalkley, "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia: Extracted from the Court Records of Augusta County, 1745-1800," (orig. publ. 1912; reprinted Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1965, 1966, 1974, 1980, 1989), but just one ref. to a Henry. It appears in Vol. II, p. 159, in the section on Circuit Court Records, Section "I" which is explained on p. 3 "These notes are extracted from the records of the District Court, the Circuit Superior Court, the Circuit Court, and all papers belonging to the records of the present Circuit Court. The references are to the bundles of original papers and style of suit or to the number of the order or record book in which the original papers will be found." In the subsection Judgments April, 1799 (K to Z), Circuit Court Causes Ended p. 159 "Sites vs. Rader -- O.S. 193; N.S. 68 -- Bill, 1811. Orator Christian Sites in 1803 bought from John Gum a tract in Rockingham. There is an interlock of 23 1/2 acres claimed by Michael Lincoln under Jost Hite and 53 acres formerly owned by Philip Rymel, who held under Hite. Gum claimed under a patent to Timothy Coe in 1756, who sold to John's father Jacob and heir-at-law Timothy Coe. John Gum had a brother Jacob. Timothy was not Timothy's eldest son and heir but the eldest son and heir was John Coe, who long since removed out of Virginia. The patent to Timothy Coe was founded on a survey in 1794 for William Mark (?) for 190 acres. John Gum had moved to Kentucky, where he died intestate, and his administrator, Sheppard Gum, assigned the bonds to John Rader. Tuliver Whitehurst (Whitehouse) deposes in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. Comfort Whitehurst, sister of Gum deposes asabove. Jacob Whitehurst, nephew of gum, deposes as above. John Vance deposes as above; formerly owned land in Rockingham; (Sites?) had a son-in-law HENRY MAYS. Oden Whitehouse deposes in Rockingham; nephew of Gum. George Sites, son of Christian, deposes in Rockingham, 1812. Peter Sites deposes he and Jacob Showalter were brothers-in-law. Peter and Christian were brothers. Deed dated 18th July, 1797, by Philip Ryemil and Catheren his wife, of Rockingham to Christian Sites. Lot No. 8 of Hites' grant. Record in Rockingham, July 1797. Copy of survey, 1749, for Wm. Marks, 190 acres on Linvell's Creek. Copy of the grant courses now in dispute. Agreement 18th March, 1803 between John Gum and Christian Seyth, 100 acres in Rockingham." At the Bassett library I was able to look at Lela C. Adams files for the Hollandsworth and Mayse families. (I don't know if you all know that Lee Adams died a few years ago from breast cancer.) In the file was a fantastic group sheet on the Mayse family put together by Sally (Pander) Prior in 1981 (1982 address: 400 Detwiller Lane, Bellevue, Wash., 98004.) I'm going to include her information, prefaced in each case by "PDD" and I'm listing her sources below. The numbers in her notes will refer to this listing: 1. Will Bk. 1, Henry Co. Birth information shown on my chart from PDD chart, she cites sources 25 and 26. My own feeling is also that this is the Henry Mays I've been seeing for years in Amelia and Halifax Co. records, and not a Frenchman naturalized in Augusta. For his death, PDD cites source 1. She has all these surname spellings on this chart: Maze, Mayse, Mayze, Mayes) An interesting note is written on the line for church affiliation: "Anglican cong. on Leatherwood Creek ca. 1770; Bapt. & Meth. after Rev. (sites source 11.) I would love to know if there are any records of that Anglican church -- I have never seen any.) My own research on the Doss family of Pittsylvania Co. shows that James Doss supported on Judah Mays for many years. The records of her being supported by the parish (Antrim, Halifax Co.) begin in 1765 when Joseph Terry was paid for her. (Source: Vestry Book of Antrim Parish, Halifax Co. Va. 1752-1817, Marian Dodson Chiarito, s.p., 1983; records continue into the years after a new parish was formed in Pittsylvania.). A further suggestion that this could be the same family is that Abraham Mays, son of Henry, married Fannie Doss, daughter of this same James Doss, in Kentucky, many years later.) Mattox Mays is also listed in the Antrim Vestry Book. I went on the on-line image base for Va. Patents and Grants of the Library of Va. and found these records which may pertain to our search: Most likely our Henry: Henry MAY patented 868 ac. in Lunenburg Co. in 1760 (Pat. Bk. 33, p. 741) on "Horsepen" Creek adj. Walden and Williams. My gazateer doesn't show Horsepen Cr in (then) Lunenburg; the entry record book has one entry on Horsepen Cr. (for James Murphy) and on the next page changes to "Horsepasture Creek". This is in 1751 when Waltons took out many large entries along several watercourses, incl. Horsepasture, Mayo River, Snow Creek, Pig River. What makes this very interesting is that the headwaters of Horsepasture Creek run right into Blackberry Creek, putting this Henry May in just the spot we want him! Earlier references that might be our Henry: 25 Sept. 1746, 329 ac. in Lunenburg on Little Roanoke River (Bk. 24, p. 529). Also 25 June 1747, 554 ac. on Little Roanoke, (Bk. 28, p. 80). All these are in the name of Henry MAY. The patent records reveal two areas of inquiry we should pursue: first, a number of people named MAZE who were clearly in the Augusta area, several patents in Bath Co., then went to (now) West Va., with more patents in Greenbrier, Mason and other counties. Much more interesting to me is Henry MAYES of Pr. George Co. who patented land in Henrico and Pr. George counties. I'm going to create a new spot for him, because I think he will turn out to be our Henry's father! There are a couple extra Mays marriages in Henry Co. in Lee Adams' notes: Jesse Mays m. Sally Smith 31Oct. 1796 and Susannah Mays m. George Sumpter, 4 Oct. 1796. She also lists those who took the Rev. War oath of allegiance in Henry Co., 30 Aug. 1777 as Abraham, David, Henry and Sherrod Maze Henry Co. Deed Bk. 3, p. 403 (as abstracted in Lela Adam's book) 12 Oct. 1787. Henry Mayse of Henry Co. to John Smith of the same for the sum of Ð5 sells 50 acres of land withthe line of John Witt as the old line up the ridge as the path goes, crossing the North Fork of Fall Creek. Signed Henry Mayse, his mark. Witn: David Mayse (his mark), Ben Moore (his mark), William Moore. Proved 14 April 1788. On the same date, next deed, Sherod Mayse sold land to John Smith. Henry Co. Deed Bk. 7, p. 52, Henry Mayse to Phoebe Mayse, but I don't have a copy. : Much of the research on the descendants of this family has been done by the following researchers: Joe Chandler, Selena DuLac, Tracy Knauss, Bert Mayes decd., Steven Mayes decd. WE BELIEVE IN SHARING, but please give credit where credit is due! (If you have contributed to my files and I have not given you credit please contact me. This mressage has been attached to my records on 27 Aug 1998, after finding much of my information on the Internet, and not submitted by me. Thanks, Selena) NOTE: For some reason I had a death date of 25 Oct 1787, but this doesn't work if the will was probated 15 May of 1787! AKA: Henery Mayse, Henery Maze and Henry Mays. There is a difference of opinion as to his possible birth date. Jewell Mayes in his early writings fixed it about 1700 and later changed it to 1710. On the other hand O. C. Mayes by calculation from the ages of the children of Henry Mayze, sets his birth date about 1725. The name Phoebe appears too often in this family to be random (see 2 daughters-in-law of that name). It was not that common. If we checked back on some of the daughters in law, I think we might find a family for our Phoebe who m. Henry. lvd@@interworldnet.net check out my homepage http://www.interworldnet.net/users/lvd | ||||||||||||||||||||||
