Notes for Phoebe Hollandsworth
From Patrick Co. Marriage Abstract: she is called "dau. of Thomas Hollandsworth, surety Joseph Cummings, minister was George Dodson.

29 Mar 1794 Simon Dodson and Febey(Phoebe) Hollandsworth, d/o Thomas Hollandsworth. Sur. Joseph Cummings. Min. George Dodson.
Notes for Simon (Spouse 1)
Simon Dodson (Dotson), progenitor of the Dotsons of Wise and Dickenson counties, emigrated from Patrick County, Virginia. He wa a descendant of Charles Dodson of old Rappahannock County, Virginia. Soon after his marriage to Phoebe Hollandsworth, we find where Simon was starting on his own by purchasing land in Patrick County, in April 1795, from one William Reed and selling the same tract of land in 1802, to William Webb. It is believed that about this date he emigrated to what is now Scott County, Virginia, settling on a tributary of Stock Creek, near Natural Tunnel. About 1820 he sold his land on Stock Creek to his son-in-law, Schuyler Hamilton, and moved to what is now Wise Co., settling on Guest River, near the present day town of Tacoma. A definate date on this settlement has not been established.
From a book entitled "The Dodson (Dotson) Family of North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia: A History and Genealogy of Their Descendants" by Mrs. Sherman Williams and Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr.; Southern Historical Press, Greenville, S.C.

"Simon DoTson was born between 1761 and 1772 in Pittsylvania Co. Va. and died May 30, 1849 "at the age of 88" in Wise Co. Va. This record is from the minutes of the Big Glades Primitive Baptist Church (now defunct) where Simon was a deacon when
the church was organized in May 1847. The personal property tax lists of Patrick Co. Va. suggest the later birth year. The belief that he was born in Pittsylvania is open to question.

"Simon married Phoeba Hollingsworth [sic] on 29 March 1794 in Patrick Co. The ceremony was performed by Rev. George Dodson. She was the daughter of Thomas and Susanna Mayze (Mays) Hollingsworth [sic]. They continued to reside in Patrick Co.
where Simon purchased from William Reed in 1795, 140 acres adjoining Rogers. James and Isaac Hollandsworth [sic] were witnesses to the deed (Patrick Co. DB I, p. 294). In 1802 Simon and Phebe Dodson sold to William Webb 180 acres in the Flat Hollow (Patrick DB II, p. 263). 1802 is also the last year that Simon appears on the personal property tax list in Patrick Co. On Oct. 31, 1807, Simon and Phoebe Dodson and Mary Dodson joined the old Stoney Creek Baptist Church in Scott Co. Va. (formerly Lee Co.) Mary Dodson is unidentified, though some have suggested she might be Simon's sister.

"In 1810 Simon was in Lee Co... On Oct. 29 he purchased 200 acres on Stock Creek, Scott co., from David Tittle (Scott Co. DB 2, p. 129). This must be the land that was on Devil's Race Path Branch, near Natural Tunnel, which he sold in 1821 to his son-in-law, Schuyler Hamilton, who was at that time living in Ramsey, Va., and it must be about this date that Simon moved to the present bounds of Wise Co. Va. where he settled on Guest River near Tacoma.

"In the records of Russell Co. Va. is found that Simon was appointed to a jury to view a road "from Simon Dotson's on Guesses River to Freeman Beverly's Grist Mill on said river. Simon's son William was on the same jury...

"According to the records of Mr. [sic, should this be Mrs.?]Emory L. Hamilton of Wise Va., Phoebe was born about 1756-58. "She died shortly after my mother, Anne Eliza Beverly married my father, Shadrach Polley, which was 13 Nov. 1873. Phoebe was said to be 115 to 117 years old when she died; she was blind for several years before her death in 1873/4. She was tall, slender, had light hair and a fair complexion." [Libbie's note: she was probably born ca. 1775. These authors point
out that this age is probably not accurate.]

The known children of this couple are as follows

1. Susanna "Sookey" Dotson, b. ca. 1795, Patrick Co., died 1871 in Ramsey, Wise Co. Va.; m. probably in Russell Co., Schuyler Hamilton (1787-1861). They are buried in the old part of Laurel Grove Cemetery. Tradition says they had 17 children,
of whom 14 are listed elsewhere in this book. [I didn't notice that the grandchildren were in the book and failed to copy them -- sorry!]

2. Artie Dotson, b. ca. 1795, m. Jacob Butcher; after her death he married Hannah Beverly.

3. Lydia, m. (1) 17 May 1826, Ely Hall; they separated and she then married James Roberts; she died in Johnson Co. Ky.

4. Elizabeth, b. ca. 1800; died Sept. 1883, married Robert S. Beverly as his second wife.

5. William, b. ca. 1803 (death register of Wise co. says born 1799); married (1) Mary (Polly) Hutchinson; (2) Celia Plummer Horton, widow of Madison Horton.

6. Thomas, b. ca. 1804; died 1890; married 27 Nov. 1832, Scott Co. Va., Abigail Hillman.

7. Daniel, b. ca. 1808; d. The Pound, Va., m. 17 May 1826, Nancy Robinson.

8. James O. Dotson, b. ca. 1814; married Elizabeth Bush

9. Mary, b. ca. 1817; died 1877; married Charles Hugg (1812-1862); they are both buried at Laurel Grove Cem., Ramsey, Va.

10. Andrew Jackson Dotson, b. ca. 1818; m. 28 Oct. 1836, Jane Matney.

11. Benjamin, m. Nancy Chase

12. Annie, m. Hardin Dale.

Now, Simon is shown in this book to be the son of William, who was the son of Lambeth Jr., who was the son of Lambeth, son of Charles the patriarch. Very briefly,

William b. about 1750-1760 in Va. and died after 1830 in White Co. Tenn. The name of his wife, or wives, is not known. He is probably the William Dodson who served in Hamon Critz's Henry Co. militia during the Rev. War. He was in White Co.
Tenn. by 1820. Children were: Simon, William "Bucky" Dotson, Eli DoDson, Daniel DoTson.

Ann, one note of interest for you: Daniel owned land, apparently inherited from his father which adjoined Ruben P.Sanders, Ruben Chambers, and JOHN SMALLMAN. There is no reference for this; it appears to have been in White Co. Tenn. This
goes on to say he may have gone to Marion Co. Ark. [Libbie's note: this may be Madison Co. Ark. I have a friend who traced a huge group including many Dodsons from Patrick to the Holston to White/Warren Cos. Tenn. to Madison Co. Ala. to
Madison Co. Ark. from 1780-1850.]

Moving along (can anyone tell I'm getting tired of sitting here?) to Lambeth II, about whom the book says:

"Until more definite proof can be found we can only suggest that the Lambeth Dodson discussed here is the son of the elder Lambeth Dodson of early Richmond Co. Va., though his name makes it a reasonable conjecture. We may in some instances be
confusing the records of two Lambeth Dodsons."

The book goes on to say that a Lambeth Dodson patented land in Henry Co. on 1 Dec. 1779. There is a further discussion of his lands; also of the difficulty of distinguishing him from the other Lambeth Dodson. Nothing much here for us, except
it says he lived right on the VA-NC border. There are no dates for him. His wife as shown on one deed was Elizabeth, but her last name is not known.

His children included Richard, Charles, Lambeth III, Reuben and William.

I don't want to go into the stuff on Lambeth Sr. or Charles because it is very long and involved, and doesn't pertain to the discussion here. I'll mail it to Jimmy and he can tell us if I missed anything important. I will tell you that
Lambeth Sr. was the first Dodson into what became Pittsylvania - Henry - Patrick. He was born in the late 1600s and died after 1779. He was married at least twice but neither wife's name is known. He was the son of Charles I and Ann Dodson.
